Emotion AI, also called affective computing, uses software to infer emotional states from facial expressions, voice tone, text, or biometrics. Vendors including MorphCast, Aware, HireVue, and Microsoft's Azure offer tools that analyze workers in meetings, calls, chats, and job interviews. Major employers such as MetLife use the technology to monitor call-center agents. In 2024 the European Union banned emotion AI in workplaces except for medical or safety uses. Much of the field draws on Paul Ekman's basic-emotions theory, which has been widely challenged by subsequent psychological research.
