Shapiro Ally Says Governor Asked Union to Back GOP Treasurer Over Democratic Critic

The recorded allegation could shadow Shapiro's expected 2028 presidential run by reinforcing concerns that he retaliates against intra-party critics rather than uniting Democrats.
The facts · bedrock
Bob Brooks, president of Pennsylvania's firefighters union and a Shapiro-backed congressional candidate, told Lehigh University students last week that Gov. Josh Shapiro asked the union to endorse Republican Stacy Garrity over Democrat Erin McClelland in the 2024 state treasurer's race. Axios obtained a recording of the remarks. McClelland had publicly questioned in July 2024 whether Shapiro could serve under a female president while he was being vetted as Kamala Harris's running mate. Brooks and Shapiro spokesperson Manuel Bonder both said the comment was inaccurate and that Shapiro made no such request. Garrity won reelection and is now challenging Shapiro for governor.

How it's being framed
Same facts, different stories. We name the frame instead of pretending neutrality.
Vindictive-politician frame
"A revealing leak about a governor with presidential ambitions who punishes intra-party critics by quietly aiding their Republican opponents — a pattern of thin-skinned, hardball score-settling that could haunt a 2028 run."
Walked-back-allegation frame
"An ally's offhand remark to college students, now retracted as inaccurate and denied by everyone involved, is being inflated into a scandal despite no corroborating evidence that the governor actually directed any endorsement."
Vereb-harassment-fallout frame
"The episode traces back to a Democratic candidate calling out how the governor's office handled a sexual harassment complaint against a top aide, and the retaliation story shows how internal critics on that issue got frozen out."
